Prof Xiao has been awarded the RSC Tilden Prize.

Hongyan Zhou has returned to Lanzhou, China. The group wish her all the best for her future study.

Renpeng Guan (MSc, Hunan University) and Guanhong Chen (MChem, XJTLU/UoL) joined the group as new PhD students with support from CSC. Sydney Williams (MChem, UoL) joined the group as a new PhD student with support from EPSRC and AstraZeneca.

Dr Aysecik Kacmaz of the University of Istanbul joined the group as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow supported by TUBITAK.

Associate Professor Hongyan Zhou of Northwest Normal University joined the group as an Honorary Research Assistant.

Elliot`s paper on the permittivities (dielectric constants) of 64 ionic liquids measured as a function of frequency has been published in J. Molecular Liquids 2019, 294, 111571.

Prof Yong Yang of the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited the group. Prof Yang is a Newton Advanced Fellow.

"Iron-Catalyzed Anti-Markovnikov Hydroamination and Hydroamidation of Allylic Alcohols" has appeared in J. Am. Chem. Soc. The work was carried out by Prof Chao Wang`s team at the Shaanxi Normal University in collaboration with the Xiao group at Liverpool.

Profs Bolun Yang, Xin Chen, Guidong Yang and Chunran Chang of the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, XJTU, visited the department and attended the Liverpool-XJTU Workshop on "Catalysis, Energy and Materials", organised by the XJTU-Liverpool Joint Laboratory of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Liverpool.

Profs Hongfu Yuan, Xiaoyu Li and Longhai Guo of BUCT visited the group and introduced their research.

Transition-Metal-Free Hydrogen Autotransfer: Diastereoselective N-Alkylation of Amines with Racemic Alcohols has appeared in Angewandte, as a "Hot Paper". The work was carried out by Prof Chao Wang`s team at the Shaanxi Normal University and Prof Ming Lei`s team at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology, in collaboration with the Xiao group at Liverpool.

Manganese-catalysed oxidation of silanes with H2O2 has appeared in Angewandte, as a VIP paper featured on the font cover. The work was carried out by Prof Chaoqun Li at the Shaanxi Normal University in collaboration with the Xiao group at Liverpool.

Angela`s paper "Boosting molecular complexity with O2" appeared in Chem. Eur. J. as a Hot Paper.

Dr Ramachandran Gunasekar joined the group as a KTP Associate working with LCC, from Prof Kitamura`s group in Nagoya University.

Ahmed successfully passed his PhD viva on 18 December. The group warmly congratulated Dr Ahmed for his excellent achievement!

Robina Begum finished her one year`s study and went back to Pakistan on October 2018.

Zhenyu Chen, Liangliang Zhao and Shiyu Zhang joined Xiao group, and started their PhD studies on September 2017.

Dr. Elliot Bennett, Dr. Zhiliang Huang, and Dr. Prashant Kumar joined Xiao group as postdoctoral.

Profs Jianliang Xiao and Tao Zhang have been awarded an International Collaboration Award by the Royal Society. Prof Zhang is at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, an Academician and Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences. We are now recruiting a Research Assistant to work on biomass conversion with molecular catalysts (3 years, to start in December 2017). For informal enquiry, email: j.xiao@liv.ac.uk

(1) Homogeneous catalytic oxidation, three years funded by EPSRC.

Piyada Taboonpong joined the group as a visiting PhD student from Chulalongkorn University.

Dinesh’s paper “A Simple Iridicycle Catalyst for Efficient Transfer Hydrogenation of N-Heterocycles in Water” has appeared in Eur. Chem. J. This paper is featured as a Frontispiece and has been highlighted on ChemistryViews.

Dinesh’s paper “ Regioselective Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling of N-Heterocycles towards Functionalized Quinolines, Phenanthrolines and Indoles” has appeared in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.

Xiaofeng’s review “Reduction of C=O to CHOH by Metal-Catalyzed Hydrogenation and Transfer Hydrogenation” has appeared in a major reference book, Comprehensive Organic Synthesis II, Elsevier, 2014.

Congratulations to Jianjun for winning the Award “Outstanding Self-financed Chinese Students Studying Abroad” given by the China Scholarship Council.

Every Chinese PhD student from this group has been awarded in the past. Jianjun is the 5thto receive this honor. Previous winners are Dr Jun Mo (2004), Dr Xiaofeng Wu (2006), Dr Chaoqun Li (2008), and Prof Chao Wang (2010). Dr Yunfei Luo, jointly supervised, is also a winner.
